More than 70 tribal groups occupy the land with English and Swahili being the official languages of Kenya, however many other major tribal languages are spoken in the area. Home to the ‘big 5’ Kenya has some of the most beautiful scenery in which to see its wildlife such as Maasai Mara National Reserve and Lake Nakuru National Park.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s best known game reserve. There are no fences between the Maasai Mara and the bordering Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, allowing large numbers of animals to roam freely between the two parks. You will also be likely to spot the ‘Big 5’ here – buffalo, elephant, rhino, lion and leopard, the park also has very healthy populations of cheetah, zebra, giraffe, hippo, hyena, jackal, eland, crocodile and a wide variety of birds.
A two hour drive from Nairobi (Kenya’s capital) and situated on the Great Rift Valley floor is Lake Nakuru National Park, famous for its abundance of birdlife including Flamingo as well as having both black and white Rhino in residence. Other wildlife found in the park are buffalo, lion, leopard, baboon and antelope to name a few.
The dry seasons in Kenya and in turn the main tourist season are January and February and then July to October. If looking to maybe catch a glimpse of the migration then travel August to October. Alternatively if you don’t mind the rain travel between March and June and October to December.
